Merry Christmas 2016!

Christmas is drawing near and now it is the month of December - the time where you get your bonus and school holidays are here and you get more time to spend with your kids. Everywhere I go, it seems to be crowded and packed with cars. I would like to wish all my readers here a Very Merry Christmas in 2016 that is drawing to a close. It is time for season's greetings and merry-making. It is also a time to give and to receive. Let us celebrate Jesus' birth on 25th December who came as a Saviour to mankind and defeated the evil one, once and for all. The resurrection power on the cross gave us eternity in heaven when we are called to be with our Maker.

4 Beginner Writing Mistakes to Avoid

Writing a book is tough. You have a long journey ahead and to help you on that journey, here’s a road map of the common pitfalls. Avoid the beginner mistakes and you will reach your destination much more quickly and easily than you would have otherwise.

Meaningless Phrases: Clichés are common phrases that are hackneyed and tired. They infuse your work with these same qualities. Awareness is the key here. Cut the clichés and replace the overused phrases with fresh language. Clichesite offers a long list of common clichés to help you identify and ferret out these phrases. They make your writing seem bland and leave it devoid of feeling. Your readers will thank you.

Author Intrusion: Many beginning writers make this common mistake. Characters need to stand apart from you. Don't create a bunch of clones of you that think your thoughts, have your habits, and spout your sayings. You need to create characters different from you. Try a character chart to flesh out a character with original ideas and thoughts. Here is a link to a character survey at Eclectics that will help you create an original character. Your readers will itch to turn the next page of your story.

Preaching and Teaching: Preaching is for the pulpit and teaching is for the classroom. Many writers want to preach and teach in their stories. No reader likes to be told the moral of the story. No one wants a lesson in virtue. Morals and lessons need to be shown to the readers. Readers want to experience the writer’s created world for themselves. You, as the writer, may have something important to say, but you must learn to trust your readers. Readers can figure things out. Get heavy handed with the preaching and teaching, and your readers will bristle fiercely at your sermonizing and yawn at your lessons.

Word abuse: Many writers use pet phrases over and over throughout a manuscript. Make a list of the words you use too much and perform a special edit of your work to “clean up” your personal word abuse. Another common form of word abuse is too many "to be" verbs (is, am, are, was, were, been, be, being), and not enough active verbs. Search out “to be” verbs and replace. Finally, a few words have lost meaning from overuse. Here is a list of common overused words: bad, good, big, fine, amazing, awesome, happy, nice, interesting, well, and just. Be kind to your readers and cut or replace overused words. - Molly Blaisdell

Quayside - Like a Resort

Quayside is an exclusive condominium beside Straits Quay with a resort like swimming pool and amenities. My aunt owns a unit there and she comes here to stay whenever she is out from Singapore. She has also bought a brand new Mercedes Benz E250 2 - 3 years back for her own use whenever she is out here for holidays in Penang. She is a property investor and makes money buying and selling properties. As a law graduate, she used to do conveyancing and prepared Sales & Purchase Agreement for clients. Hence, she will be the first person to know a good buy whenever any property is out for sale in Singapore. However, she is in her eighties now, retired and suffering from the early stages of dementia. As she is single and unmarried, she has asked my mother, her youngest sister to take care of her should she have advanced stage of Alzheimer's disease. My mum had promised to hire two nurses to take care of her in the later stages of her life when she is incapacitated.

Flying to KL tomorrow

I shall be flying via Firefly to KL tomorrow to Subang Airport which is very near my condo. I will be there on business and only come back on Friday night at around 9:00pm, departing 1 hour earlier. The return fare for 2 cost slightly over RM 1k just for a 2 day visit and we need to come back before Bersih 5 demonstration starts with Red shirts trying to stop them at whatever costs - even bloodshed. Well, as a citizen, I am concern over the developments of the country but sometimes this is much we can do and need to concentrate on our business than politics. I just wish for a peaceful assembly to show the world that we need a clean government.

Is Dad trying to ask for more money?

Every month I give dad RM 550 plus RM 250 for the church and RM 50 for mum - totalling RM 850 per month! Thst is a lot of money but it does not seem enough for dad. He thinks I make too much money and should share more with him, giving hints now and then. I am not exactly a favourite daughter, so I give as much as my youngest sister who is favoured over me. My dad's favourite, my second younger sister is not longer contributing since she needs money to pursue her PhD programme in the UK. Right now the house is divided equally amongst the 3 of us siblings. But dad in his defense, told me he can change the percentage anytime! Such is the support I get from my family who squeezes money from me and does not give me the due respect as a daughter.

Uber CPM

There is a new publishing company like Google Adsense and is a good alternative with many adverts on its banners placed at your sites. To join this network, click on http://ubercpm.com/index.php?rp=5377 where you can join immediately but never click on your own ads. It is good to leverage on your various blogs via this network should you be banned permanently from Adsense. I don't know how good the conversion rates are but you can withdraw via Paypal when you hit USD 10, unlike USD 100 for Adsense. Though it is lower income, but nevertheless, something is better than nothing at all, don't you agree? Don't be greedy and don't cheat. Honesty is the best policy!

Money is Everything

Money is important but not everything. It can buy you comfort but not health, even though you can buy supplements and vitamins to prolong your life. It is a tool to exchange for food, clothing, transport and the like. With more money, you can live more comfortably during your retirement years and hopefully stretch the money to a lifetime. Everyone works hard for a golden retirement and not a woeful one where one has to beg in the streets like a vagrant. You want to be surrounded by loved ones and money can buy their love and loyalty.

Marriages break down and divorces happen all due to money problems and financial difficulties. But once the breadwinner starts to earn more money, then the wife may reconsider reconciling with her spouse. Hence, money speaks louder than relationships.

Blogging takes effort

Blogging certainly takes effort and each post is painstakingly written with images processed for faster uploading after enhancements and resizing. You also need to be able to type fast and think on the spot as you type along. As I have changed the URL to the new blogs, they are basically still new and need time for being indexed by Google search engine. I have around 6 - 7 blogs that I update at least once per week to keep the contents fresh. Sometimes, you encounter writer's mental block and don't know what to blog on. But as long as it is not on politics, criticism, it is safe to write. Being in business, we keep ourselves free from issues surrounding the Malaysian government and don't comment on it. I can only pray for the country.

Dinner at Porridge Time Cafe

At the basement of a megamall of 1 Utama in Petaling Jaya, is a gem of a cafe called Porridge Time Cafe as can be seen in the photos above. This is the front view to the cafe full of wooden furniture of tables and stools.

The is the ambiance and you can see, almost all things are wooden except for the cutleries. Being a weekend, it was full of diners who patronize here frequently. The place is usually packed with people due to its affordable yet delicious food.

This is Porridge Time Cafe menu with a selection of choices to pick from just a single page. I ordered a few dishes for myself and my partner. There is a wide repertoire of food to choose from with many selections of various porridges of different ingredients and drinks.

Here was my order of grouper porridge even though the sliced grouper was hidden by the porridge. There were generous portions of it. The porridge was boiled for a long time until the rice beads almost become liquid in a thick gravy.

I ordered extra 'HK Choy Sum' or also known as Chinese flowering cabbage according to Wikipedia. Choy Sum is a Cantonese name for green leafy vegetable, similar to 'kailan' that is usually used in Chicken Rice Shop and topped with oyster sauce.

Above was my partner's order of fish cake noodle soup consisting of fu chok, fish cake, choy sum, spring onions and springy noodles like wan ton noodles. The soup was a bit salty though, but nevertheless, I finished it leaving the noodles after my partner had his share.

If you are interested to try this place, the address is as below:

Address: Bandar Utama LG113A, Lower Ground Floor,
One Utama Shopping Centre, 1, Lebuh Bandar Utama,
47800 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Buffet Breatkfast at Vouk Hotel Suites

This is the ambience of the restaurant at Vouk Hotel Suites for buffet breakfast from 6:30am to 10:30am on the second floor. The furniture is rather attractive and the place has about 20-30 tables for guests. It is divided into partitions for more privacy.

You cannot go wrong when you book a place to stay at hotels owned by MBI, which happens to be the owner of the just opened M Mall in Penang Times Square this year. The head honcho of this conglomerate is Mr Teddy Teoh himself, who has made good in China and returned to Penang to develop the island state.

Above are croissants, chocolate muffins, pastries, velvet cake with topped with butter cream, buns, various spreads like jams and butter. There is also another counter with the mains like nasi lemak and the usual sambal anchovies, sliced cucumber, halved hard-boiled eggs, and roasted nuts. Another counter was set up just for salads with dressings for the health conscious. Cut fruits were also available like watermelon, honeydew, orange wedges and apples. It was continental food for the taking.

We also had sausages, baked beans, noodles, eggs, etc. from the main buffet spread counter. The food was not too bad and had a plethora of various foods for the hotel guests. It comes with free WiFi and buffet breakfast all included in the hotel stay per night of RM 201, inclusive of GST and other miscellaneous charges that were absorbed by the hotel. The stay was short for one night over the Hari Raya Holidays from 6th to 7th July 2016 recently.

Today is a Saturday

Hari Raya is just over and my youngest sister who works in an MNC, took advantage of the long holidays including over the weekend to travel by bus to Kuala Lumpur and fly back to Penang with her church friends. Today is a Saturday, and I am busy pounding the keyboard to update my many blogs. With pictures added, it has kept me busy editing the pictures, resizing them and cropping up unwanted images. My life certainly revolves around working with the computer, be it a holiday or a working day. And work is just a simple walk to the next room in my cozy condominium. I just came back from a 1 night stay at Vouk Hotel that was recently opened by MBI, the owner of M Mall in Penang Times Square. It was during my birthday on the 6th of July.

Dark Mansion - 3D Glow in the Dark Museum

Dark Mansion is not what you would think it is. Far from vampires, ghouls, etc. In fact, it is the friendly 3D Glow in the Dark Museum where you can bring along your children. It is a world of magic and fantasy and touted to be one of the trendiest modern art museums as it integrates science and technology with arts.

Photo with troll dolls - those with colourful standing hair and beady eyes. Aren't they cute? They were very popular in the 1980s.

Having a hand at pulling 'Teh Tarik' which means pulled tea in Malay. Just don an apron and walk behind a room with the pictures pasted on glass and put your hands at the right places and you look like a maestro in making teh tarik.

Climbing a giant Rubik's cube. Well it is all a matter of perspective and magical illusion during the photo taking. Simply place your feet at the right places with your arms outstretched and voila! - looks like you are better than doing rock climbing.

When the light fades off, special living creatures might come alive. Let’s see if you could identify the hidden creatures.

The artwork “Water and Fire” is a work of the famous Edgar Müller, the master street painter, who has brought 3-D illusion street painting to another level by incorporating technology in art. Be ready for a big surprise when the light changes from a waterfall to molten lava in volcanoes.

See the hanging gardens of Pandora forest as in the award-winning movie, Avatar. It is the placements of mirrors around the room that gives the illusion of infinity and lots of suspended jellyfish. For more information, check the details below:

Hope to have Back Blogging Bounty

I have made some money in the past, especially from the years 2006 - 2014 for blogging and the bounty comes in handy. It is not easy to think on your feet while typing away at the keyboard, but then again no work, means no potential revenue. The only difference is that you can do this at the comfort of your home or anywhere with WiFi and internet connectivity. I shall be going to KL next Wednesday for business and to look into my apartment's new installation of water pipe to replace the leaked water pipe in the bathroom. No wonder, the water bill, which should at most be $15 per month, cost us a bomb at $144 per month for 2-3 days of stay in 1 month! The water meter dial was moving very fast and apparently the water was leaking inside the burst water pipe. The maintenance guy told us it is going to cost us $450 for this job and well, my spouse will foot the bill.
